1. Academics (40 points)

A. Coursework (30 points)

Courses scored: every semester grade on the transcript for (1) all AP and dual credit courses, and (2) all other courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, and languages other than English. Physical education, health, and other electives are not scored.

Step 1: Convert each grade to points on a 6.0 scale.

Points = 6.0 − 0.1 × (100 − Grade)

Examples: 100 = 6.0, 99 = 5.9, 95 = 5.5, 90 = 5.0, 70 = 3.0. Any failing grade (below 70) = 0.

Dual credit courses. College transcripts report letter grades only. Applicants self-report the tier earned, based on their final course percentage, and certify its accuracy. Each tier is scored at the midpoint of its range. The reported tier must match the transcript letter (a transcript "A" may be reported only as A+, A, or A−); if it does not, the course is scored at the lowest tier of that letter.

DC tier Percentage range Points
A+ 97–100 5.85
A 94–96.99 5.55
A− 90–93.99 5.20
B+ 87–89.99 4.85
B 84–86.99 4.55
B− 80–83.99 4.20
C+ 77–79.99 3.85
C 74–76.99 3.55
C− 70–73.99 3.20
F Below 70 0

Step 2: Multiply by the course-level weight.

Course level Weight Maximum points per course
AP 1.00 6.00
Dual Credit 1.00 6.00
Honors 0.93 5.58
Flex 0.80 4.80
Regular 0.50 3.00

Step 3: Average the weighted values across all scored courses, then scale to 30.

Coursework score = 30 × (Average weighted value ÷ 6.0)

Worked example

Course Grade Points Weight Weighted value
AP Calculus BC 98 5.80 1.00 5.800
DC English (self-reported A) A 5.55 1.00 5.550
Honors Chemistry 95 5.50 0.93 5.115
AP U.S. History 91 5.10 1.00 5.100
Spanish III (Regular) 99 5.90 0.50 2.950

Average = 24.515 ÷ 5 = 4.903. Coursework score = 30 × (4.903 ÷ 6.0) = 24.5 / 30.

B. SAT or ACT (10 points)

An SAT or ACT score is required. Each section is scored by its national percentile, as printed on the official score report.

Test score = 5 × (Math percentile ÷ 100) + 5 × (English percentile ÷ 100)
Test Math percentile English percentile
SAT Math section, nationally representative sample percentile Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, nationally representative sample percentile
ACT Math national rank Average of the English and Reading national ranks
  • Superscores are accepted: applicants may report their highest percentile for each section across test dates.
  • Example: SAT Math at the 95th percentile and Reading and Writing at the 90th percentile = 4.75 + 4.50 = 9.25 / 10.

2. Essay (20 points)

Prompt (300 words maximum): Describe a problem you noticed and chose to solve, whether in your school, job, team, or community. What did you do, what was the result, and what would you do differently?

Criterion Full Partial Weak None
Response to prompt: addresses the problem, action, result, and reflection 8 5 2 0
Specificity: concrete actions, details, and measurable results 6 4 2 0
Organization: logical structure and clear progression 3 2 1 0
Mechanics: grammar, spelling, and word choice 3 2 1 0

Scoring increments. Each essay criterion is scored in 0.25-point increments. The descriptors below define the anchor levels; scores between anchors reflect how fully the essay meets the higher level. For example, Response to Prompt may be scored 6.75.

Criterion Full Partial Weak
Response to prompt Answers all four parts; the reflection names a specific lesson tied to the experience Answers most parts; reflection is generic Describes an experience without a clear action or result
Specificity Names specific actions and quantifies the result Specific actions, but the result is general Mostly general statements
Organization Each paragraph advances the account in order Minor jumps or repetition Hard to follow
Mechanics No more than one error Two to four errors Five or more errors

3. Interest in Business (20 points)

Prompt (200 words maximum): What area of business do you plan to pursue, and why? What have you already done to prepare for it?

Criterion Full Partial Weak None
Demonstrated action: coursework, DECA/FBLA, jobs, ventures, certifications 10 6 3 0
Clarity of goal: names a specific field or path, not only "business" 6 4 2 0
Connection: explains how past experience leads to the goal 4 3 1 0
  • Demonstrated action, 10: multiple concrete experiences described with role, duration, and results.
  • 6: at least one concrete experience, described generally.
  • 3: interest stated, with evidence limited to one class or a future intention.
  • 0: no evidence of action.

4. Involvement (20 points)

Applicants list up to five activities, each with position, years involved, and a description of 50 words or fewer. Paid employment and family responsibilities count as involvement and are scored on the same criteria. Activities are scored on what the applicant did, not on the name or type of the organization.

Step 1: Score each activity out of 10.

Criterion Points Scoring
Position 3 Highest-ranking position (president, captain, founder, manager) = 3; Officer = 2; Member = 1
Years 2 3 or more years = 2; 1 to 2 years = 1
Impact 5 5 = measurable results the applicant personally drove (people led or served, funds or revenue, awards); 3 = defined responsibilities with described output, without numbers; 1 = attendance or participation only; 0 = no description

Step 2: Weight the three highest-scoring activities.

Involvement score = (Best × 1.0) + (2nd × 0.6) + (3rd × 0.4)

Maximum = 10 + 6 + 4 = 20. Listing more activities does not raise a score, and a weaker activity cannot lower a stronger one.

Example: Team captain, 4 years, led a 40-player roster to a district title (3 + 2 + 5 = 10). Club officer, 2 years, organized monthly events for 60 members (2 + 1 + 5 = 8). Club member, 3 years, attended meetings (1 + 2 + 1 = 4). Score = 10 + 4.8 + 1.6 = 16.4 / 20.

Rules and Procedures

  • Blind review. Identifying information is collected separately and removed before scoring. Applicants must not include their name or school in the essay, statement, or activity descriptions. Applications that do may be disqualified.
  • Word limits. Content beyond the stated word limit is not scored.
  • Tie-breaker. If total scores are equal, the higher Essay score wins. If still tied, the higher Interest in Business score wins. If still tied, the tied essays are re-read side by side, still anonymized, and ranked head-to-head by the selector.
  • Verification. The recipient must provide an official transcript and official score report before the award is paid. Any discrepancy that would change the result forfeits the award.
  • Certification. Applicants certify that all information is accurate and that all written work is their own. False information results in disqualification.
  • Payment. The $250 award is paid directly to the recipient's institution upon proof of full-time enrollment for the Fall 2027 term. It is not transferable and has no cash value.
  • Eligibility exclusions. Members, officers, and employees of Dark Knight LLC, and their immediate family members, are not eligible.
